Gerrit T. Rietveld was born in Utrecht, Netherlands,
the son of a cabinetmaker, Gerrit worked in his father's
workshop from the age of eleven.
He designed the Red & Blue Chair in 1918 and became
1919 one of the first members of the De Stijl Movement
in Holland. His Red & Blue chair was 1923 presented
at a Bauhaus exhibition.
In the 1920s he designed experimental fiberboard and
plywood furniture. During the economic recession, Rietveld
designed low cost furniture constructed from packing-crated
components. Later on he experimented with material like
aluminum and metal, but returned soon to his favored
material: wood.

The Schroder House, built in 1924 in Utrecht, the Netherlands,
was the first structure designed by de Stijl architect Gerrit
Rietveld. A pilgrimage site for students and historians, this
small townhouse is considered the first truly modern residence.
Its revolutionary open-plan layout provided an alternative to
confining small rooms, its strip windows broke down the barrier
between inside and outside, and its primary colour scheme and
shifting wall planes were symbols of its rupture with tradition.
This is an exploration of the building's history, presenting photographs,
showing details uncovered in the recent restoration, archival
images from when the house was built, and floor plans of each
level of the house. It also contains material from the extensive
archive amassed by the client, as well as information provided
by Bertus Mulder, Rietveld's assistant at the time the house was
built.
